Abstract

Motor vehicle accidents are one of the leading causes of death. It is possible to increase the outcome after motor vehicle accidents by providing urgent treatment by experienced staff to these victims. Most of them have multiple system injuries. Several kinds of scoring system had been develop in order to evaluate this kind of trauma. 62 of 100 cases which is admitted to emergency department of our hospital between 1987 and 1995 had been evaluated. The mean age of the patients was 29.4 (ranging from 2 to 64). 41 of them were male and 21 were female. In addition to 52 cases as a result of motor vehicle accident, there was also 7 cases due to fall from height and 3 cases due to train accidents. All patients were evaluated by using Abbreviated Injury Scale which is developed by AMA Committee. In order to obtain quantitative results, Injury Severity Score is also used in evaluation. It is possible to compare the cases by using ISS in traumatized patients and this comparision is an important step in solving the problem.
