Abstract

248 hips of the 124 newborns were investigated by ultrasonography from June 1994 to 1995. The anormalities, risk factors and the findings of examinations and ultrasonography which accompany congenital hip dislocation (CHD) were compared. 65 of the newborns who were investigated were female and 59 of them were male. It is found that 82% of the cases were Type 1a and Type 1b hip, 18% of the cases were Type 2 and Type 3 dysplastic hip. Clinical findings were normal in 80% of the cases but pathology detected by ultrasonography in the 5% of the cases clinical examination findings were positive but findings of the ultrasonographic examination were negative. In conclusion we can suggest that ultrasonography is non-invasive, cheap and safe therefore it should be used in all newborn.
