Postoperative Effect of Intraarticular Bupivacaine on Pain in Arthroscopies

Abstract
Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the effects of intraarticular bupivacaine on postoperative pain and analgesic requirements in artroscopic procedures. Material
Methods: At the end of the operation patients were seperated into two groups. Bupivacaine (0,25%, 20 ml) was given intraarticulary to group 1, while isotonic saline (20 ml, control group) was applied to group 2. In all patients, postoperative pain was assessed by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for 24 hours. Time to first analgesic use and total 24 hour analgesic requirements were recorded.
Results: Pain intensity and analgesic need were evaluated at 1., 6. and 24. hr postoperatively and was found to be less in bupivacaine group compared with the control group.
Conclusions: Intraarticular bupivacaine can provide early postoperative analgesia in arthroscopic procedures.
