Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate demographic findings of 220 patients treated with open reduction and stabilization with two cross-wires from medial and lateral sides for supracondylar humeral fracture. The clinical and radiologicl results are evaluated for the 36 of them available at latest follow-up.
Patients and methods: The results are evaluated by the criteria of Flynn, modified from Mitchell and Adams.
Results: The mean age of the 220 patients at operation was 7.7 (0.5-15) years. Ninety-three % extension type and 7 % flexion type fractures were detected in a group of 76 % boys and 24 % girls. In the last examination the mean follow-up of 36 cases, all of whom had been treated by internal fixation with two cross medial and lateral Kirschner wires, was 8.9 (4-20) years. Twenty-four (67 %) of the cases were male and 12 (33 %) were female with a mean age of 16 (7-33) years at the last follow-up. In the evaluation of these patients with Flynn's criteria; 80.5 % functionally and 94.5 % cosmetically were excellent and good.
Discussion: This study demonstrates that open reduction and stabilization with cross-wires in supracondylar humerus fractures has satisfactory results.
