Early Results Of Bipolar Leinbach Hemiarthroplasty For The Treatment Of Unstable Intertrochanteric Fractures In The Elderly Patients

Abstract

Introduction: Between 1997 and 1999, twenty-nine osteoporotic patients with unstable, comminuted intertrochanteric fractures were treated by Bipolar Leinbach hemiarthroplasty. The aim of this arthroplasty choice was to prevent insufficiency of internal fixation, complications of long immobilization period, and acetabuler erosion which was generally detected after unipolar hip arthroplasty.
Patients and methods: The mean age of cases was 75.3 (min: 59 and max: 91 years) and the mean follow-up period was 9.1 months (min: 1 month, max: 28 months). Twenty-one of them were women and 8 were men. Fractures affected left hip in 13 patients and right hip in 16 patients. The mean hospitalization period was 28.6 days (min: 14 days and max: 65 days).
Results: One patient had died at 14th day postoperatively because of the pulmonary embolism. Mean cup movement was 11° at the follow up period. We obtained 83.6% excellent and good, 16.4% fair and poor results according to Harris hip scorring system.
Discussion: We couldn't find any study which was about Bipolar Leinbach Hemiarthroplasty treating the unstable intertrochanteric fractures. There was no meaningful difference between our results and the literature. However, there was no correlation between cup movement and Harris hip score.
