Abstract

Objective: To evaluate results of treatment with intramedüller fixation in patients with tibia fractures.
Methods: Between 1996 and 1999, we have treated 39 tibial shaft fractures in 38 patients with locked tibial nail. There were 28 men and 10 women. The mean age of the patients was 31.7 (17 to 75) years. Twenty-one of the fractures were open fracture. According to Gustilo Anderson clacification there were 10 Type I, and 11 Type II. The patients were treated by unreaming intramedüller nailing. All of the fractures were locked statically and movement was not allowed. The results was evaluated according to Johner and Wrush’s criteriae.
Results: The patients were followed for a mean period of 21 months (9-38 months). The mean time of union was fifteen weeks (range, 8 to 23 weeks). One of the patients had superficial wound infection and was treated with oral antibiotics and local drops. One patient who also had diabetes mellitus ischemia was occured at third day after operation, and amputation was made above the knee. The results according to Jonher and Wrush’s criteriae was 16 exellent, 19 good, 3 moderate, 1poor.
Conclusion: İntramedullary nailing is an excellent choice for the treatment of tibia fractures but in patients who had diabetes mellitus or atherosclerotic disease should be considered for amputation.
