Abstract

We examined the structural properties of the fibular band that replaced the absent fibula in two cases of the congenital absence of the fibula. Both total and partial excision of the band allowed the foot to be brought to the neutral position. In the gross examination, the band showed enlargement in the harder distal part representing lateral malleolus and histologic examination of this part revealed a hyalin cartilage structure surrounded by perichondrium. We suggest that this part has the opportunity to develope into bone and therefore recommend partial excision ofthe band as the first step of treatment.
